CST Profile Cut and Bend

Every surface creates mystery.
The wall divides, forbids, shuts out,
stops,
Or blocks: a tombstone, a gravestone,
A lid – neither going up nor down.
Such non-permanence
Excites and inquires:
And beyond? And below?
And above? And inside? And outside?
It creates the pleasure of breaking up,
Crossing over,
Gaining the other side,
The air, to see
And awaken on the same horizon.
When I cut and bend
A metal sheet
Or only cut it,
I intend
To open up a space
On awakening in the raw material
A light that’s worth a flame and reveals
The communion of the opaque
With the space of the stars,
A space
That reveals rebirth
Redeeming the heavy material
In the intention to fly.

Amílcar de Castro, 1999
