For landfills with greater volume and height over 3 meters, it's possible to use it on the first layers, as long as there is a minimum coating of 2 meters, using argillaceous or sandy material over the slag released, before laying down any paving structure, due to the slag expansibility. For this application, it is recommended the LD-NP Steel Slag.
For building bases such as Telford, normally over soft soils with high levels of ground water, it is recommended the use of slag with granulometry up to 4", which starts an exothermic reaction and becomes cemented when in contact with water. This property is known as hydraulicity.

Primary layers for urban and rural roadways: Due to the hydraulicity, the slags present cementing properties that make them an interesting option for this application, also because of the good final quality of the coating. As a result, slags are a technically superior and economically advantageous option when it comes to primary layers. The high mechanical resistance, associated with a reduced level of wear, if compared with other materials, offer an efficient coating with low maintenance cost over time.
For this application, there is a condition for granular separation for withdrawing material over 257 mm, that is then applied over the bed of the land, dully scarified. The material shall be spread by motor-grader, compacted with soft roll and imprinted with a CM-30, bonded painting with asphaltic emulsion type RR-1C at a rate of 1.2 l/m², and over the paint spread around 5 liters per square meter of middle-sized sand and once again, the plate roll closes the gaps (anti-dust protection film). Further, it can be transformed in sub-base for paving the same street, incorporating the slag deposited there, but then with its expansion quite reduced, thus providing an excellent sub-base. For this application, it is recommended the LD NP Steel Slag and the so-called Steel Slag In Natura.

Storage yards / driveways and access to heavy cargoes: Due to the fact that it is a resistant material and because of other characteristics already mentioned, such as cementing property, the slag is recommended to lanes that require great resistance, such as heavy traffic areas that receive heavy cargo trucks. Therefore, the utilization of slag for this application is highly recommended, as long as it is not confined and there is no coating over it. The slag should be spread, with a thickness of around 20 cm, then wetted and compacted. On top of it, there should be released a finer granulometry slag (0 to 10 mm) 10 cm thick, for filling empty spaces, and then a new sequence of rolling for the final touch. If there is the need to eliminate the dust, it can be done by imprinting with a CM-30 and afterwards a bath with RR-1C type emulsion at a rate of 1,2 l/m², releasing middle-sized sand over this emulsion and then running a sequence of soft roll. For this application, it is recommended the Slag In Natura, with granulometry up to 32 mm.
