Road Work

Applications:

  • Road Landfills

For large volume landfills, higher than 3m, it is possible to use the NP LD slag for the first layers provided there is at least a 2m clay or sand cover on the slag before applying any paving, due to slag expansion.

For Telford type bases, usually on soft ground and high groundwater level, it is recommended the use of slag with granulometric size up to 4", which, in contact with water, undergoes an exothermal reaction and cements itself - a characteristic known as hydraulicity.

  • Primary Coating on urban and rural roads

Due to its hydraulicity, slag has cementing characteristics, which made it good for this specific use because of the coating final quality; this option is technically and economically better for primary coating. Its high mechanical resistance associated with lower wear compared to other materials offers, in the long run, an efficient and low maintenance coast coating.

Before the slag is used as ground bed it is necessary to remove the parts of granulometry over 257mm and scarify the terrain. The material should be spread with a road grader, compacted with a smooth compactor, primed with CM-30 and coated with an asphaltic micro-coating (RR-C1) at a 1.2l/m2 rate, on top of this coat spread 5l/m2 of medium size sand and the smooth compactor will fill the empty spaces (create an anti-dust protection). In the future this coating can be used as sub-base for pavement because the slag will have been completely expanded becoming an excellent sub-base. In this case it is recommended the use of NP and In Natura LD Slag.

  • Storage / manoeuvre yard for heavy loads

Because of its resistance and other already mentioned characteristics as its cementing quality, the slag is recommended for the coating of high resistance paths as heavy truck traffic areas. The use of slag to cover such areas is highly recommended provided the slag is not confined and there is no cover on top of it. A 20cm layer of slag is spread, moistened and compacted, and covered with a 10cm layer of finer slag (Granulometry 0 to 10mm) to fill in the empty spaces, followed by a smooth compactor pass for finishing. In case it is necessary to prevent dust, a CM-30 priming can be applied after the primary coating, followed by the application of an asphaltic micro-coating (RR-C1) at a1.2l/m2 rate, and covered by medium size sand and a smooth compactor pass. In this case the use of In Natura LD Slag, with granulometry up to 32mm is recommended.

  • Road base and sub-base

The LD slag presents a higher CBR (California Bearing Ratio) than stone aggregates, thus being an excellent choice of load support material, which favours the choice of the product for road base and sub-base; it can be mixed with other materials (for example, clay) offering cost savings without compromising the paving structure.
In this case it is recommended the use of ACERITA® because its characteristics make it possible to reduce the number of layers when using the ELSYM5 method.

  • Asphaltic road cover

The slag can be applied over asphalt concrete for Road paving. It is recommended the use ACERITA®.

  • Riprap

  • Riprap

The high density of the NP LD slag makes it highly effective for contention walls. The weight of the NP LD slag can be 70% higher than that of stone aggregates resulting in high quality contention. Other advantages are: low implementation and maintenance cost, high draining quality, excellent appearance and preservation of natural resources.
