LD In Natura Slag (Steel Slag)
Steel Slag Processing Plant at ArcelorMittal Tubarão
The LD In Natura Slag (Steel Slag) is generated in the Steelmaking Plant, cooled in the slag yard and then crushed and screened, but without being subject to any treatment such as expansion reduction. After crushing, screening and separating the metallic fraction, the slag is classified according to its granulometry.
The granular ranges for the slags provided by ArcelorMittal Tubarão are:
Within these applications, this material shall not be confined due to its volumetric expansibility. Confinement is a prohibiting factor for its adequate use and may bring serious problems in its further utilization.
Its characteristics are similar to the ones of the LD NP Slag (BOFS and Skimmer Slag). The only difference is the fact that LD In Natura Slag is crushed and separated granulometrically. Therefore, it also presents the following features:
Pile of In Natura Slag from 19 to 32 mm.
We shall take into account the fact that the granulometry interferes in those properties; narrower granulometry ranges present lower resistance and lower expansion; wider granulometry ranges present higher resistance and higher expansion. The advantage of the so-called In Natura over the LD NP Slag is that it allows you to choose a more suitable slag for the required application, since the LD NP has a granular range from 0 to 500 mm.
In Natura Slag has very similar applications to the ones of the LD NP Slag. It can be used in primary layers of roadways, yards without asphaltic coating, and in landfills, as long as it is not confined. In case it is utilized in a confined space, we recommend the use of a layer of clay material, which is able to absorb its expansion - Road Construction.
ArcelorMittal Tubarão also makes available the LD In Natura Slag in granulometries raging from 32 to 75 mm for railway ballast - Railway Construction.
Control
The whole utilization and handling of the LD In Natura Slag shall be monitored by skilled technical personnel, by checking the degree of compaction and level of expansion presented by the material, through field and laboratory assays. The procedures are the same as advocated by DNIT's roadways regulations for building landfills and paving roads with primary coating.
Special Cares
Care should be taken when applying slag in smaller aquatic bodies and with low water flow conditions such as soaked soils or shallow canals.
While applying slag in the soil, some procedures shall be adopted so that to minimize the generation of dust, by utilizing the wetting technique with water, thus providing a higher sintering of the floor area.
Due to its high expansion power, it is not recommended to use LD NP Slag in confined locations.
