Quality Control

Quality control of ArcelorMittal Tubarão products (slabs and coils) are guaranteed by production process monitoring systems and quality inspections carried out at all phases of the production chain.

Slabs

Monitoring Systems

The monitoring systems comprise several different computer and software systems that continuously monitor every part of the production system. The systems allow for detection of any quality event that could compromise the final quality of the slabs, making it possible to take preventative measures to correct any anomaly detected.

Quality Inspections

A chemical analysis of the steel is carried out at every phase of production, from its arrival at the converters, to secondary refining, to its arrival at the continuous casting unit where the slabs are produced.

The purpose of the analysis is to ensure the chemical composition of the steel conforms to the specifications provided by the client.

Another type of inspection is the monitoring of the Continuous Casting process by quality inspection technicians. Here the main objective is to identify the occurrence of quality events that have gone undetected by the monitoring system, supplying information to subsequent production processes which will be used to make decisions regarding procedures needed to correct the indicated anomaly, thus preventing delivery of imperfect products to the client.

Samples are taken from the slabs as they leave the Continuous Casting unit to evaluate their internal quality. This information will be used to analyze for the possible existence of fractures.

Quality control of the final product is assured by inspection of all slabs for shape, size, absence of superficial defects and internal quality, which is done using ultrasound analysis.

Coils

Monitoring Systems

ArcelorMittal Tubarão hot strip rolling mill - one of the most modern in the world - includes a last-generation monitoring system, comprising equipment, process computers, and special software to monitor each phase of coil production. The systems make it possible to detect any quality event that could compromise the final quality of the product, and to take preventative measures to correct any anomaly detected.

Quality Inspections

During the coil production process a Quality Inspection Technician carries out inspection of various coils as they leave the coiler to identify possible problems in the material and provide a report to the rolling mill operator. This makes it possible to identify coils with problems so that they can be sent to the finishing line for removal of defects.

All coils processed at the finishing line are inspected for size and shape. In this phase samples are taken from the material and sent to the Mechanical Testing Laboratory where a series of tests are carried out to assess conformity with the mechanical properties specified by international norms.
