A dream comes true
AThe creation of the ArcelorMittal Tubarão was a dream naturally coming true through employees' actions. They were mobilized towards this environmental attitude by the Interagir Program started in 1996. An internal survey carried out in 1997 showed that they wanted to have a specific space to receive training, courses and lectures from the Interagir Program. For them the commitment to environmental responsibility should be made real through the implementation of its own pedagogical space. As seed thrown on fertile land the idea bloomed and in 1998, the CEA was inaugurated.
CBuilt on a green area of 350 thousand square metres, the CEA was conceived as a space for the practice of environmental education to several different audiences. The place chosen was a green area inside company's premises, which at the time already had a large variety of fauna and flora native species.
The basic infrastructure construction started in January 1998 after an intense research and development work carried out by employees and external consultants. From the architectural concept to the choice of material, everything was planned to make the CEA into a reference as a pedagogical space for environmental education. The project used the area landscape so as not to cause any drastic changes and included the plantation of native species in order to enrich the environment to develop the flora and the fauna. The construction work used certified and treated wood, piassava fibre (Attalea funifera - a palm tree species which renews its foliage when peeled) on the roof, and very little masonry.
The same concept was used in the renovations carried out in the CEA since its opening on December 10th, 1998, including adjustments for people with special needs.
On the following years the CEA grew gradually according to the needs of the programs developed gaining new spaces, pedagogical resources and landscaping. The CEA is currently a live and dynamic showroom of ArcelorMittal Tubarão social environmental commitment to more than 50 thousand visitors per year.
