ArcelorMittal Tubarão is equipped with a complex Environmental Control System for Atmospheric Emissions improved day by day with new investments and the committed participation of all employees. The equipment and procedures that are part of the company's routine started from people's initiative, trying to produce the best steel with sustainability.
This System, efficiently managed, allows us to keep environmental indicators above Brazilian and international levels. Air quality in the Vitoria Metropolitan Area is our main target but we are aware that with this attitude we are also contributing to the quality of life on the whole planet.

It comprises 2.6 million trees covering 7km2 around the plant. The trees average height is 18 meters, ensuring the efficiency in preventing the material stored in the yards from being dragged outside the company's premises. The Green Belt is also responsible for reducing the noise levels and preventing soil erosion besides making the landscape inside and outside the company more beautiful.
There are 76 filters in the company to collect the dust generated by the processes, thus ensuring an efficient decrease in atmospheric emissions. These filters are strategically located to draw the dust before it spreads through the company.
ArcelorMittal Tubarão currently has seven precipitators used to retain metallic dust. The precipitator works as a magnet to attract energized particles present in different gases. Besides preventing this dust from spreading in the atmosphere, the equipment allows the reuse of the material in the production process.
It was implemented in 2005, responsible for the control of continuous environmental monitoring. It allows an accurate follow up of emission statistics data contributing to a better management.
ArcelorMittal Tubarão has seven gas washers to clean the gases generated in production. This procedure allows the gases to be reused in the thermoelectric plants to produce energy.
It works to humidify the raw material - iron ore and coal - so that it is not dragged by the wind from the yard or when transported. An example of water spray system is the one installed in the Car Dumper containing 40 micro-sprays.
It is performed by trucks circulating around the company. The main target is to keep the roads free of dust to reduce emissions that could result from traffic.
There are five washers to clean the wheels and tyres of vehicles and equipment at the yard exits. This way the wheels do not carry materials outside these areas.
Implemented since operation start-up these covers help reduce the action of the wind on the materials conveyor belts (coal, ore, pellets and others).
Material transfer areas - such as the blast furnace loading area - are closed and have a system to collect and filter dust.
Throughout the years since 1994, between October and March, ArcelorMittal Tubarão puts in practice a plan to intensify emission control. In this period, the winds blowing north-northeast are stronger and together with typical summer weather can create conditions that increase dust emission. The Summer Plan prevents this increasing the frequency of control actions such as water sprays in the raw material yards and road washing.
For the system to work, the equipment must be working perfectly. So, since 1996, the company has a maintenance team dedicated to this equipment.
