In October 2001, ArcelorMittal Tubarão was granted the ISO 14001 certification by the Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), concerning activities related to the integrated process to produce steel slabs using continuous casting and including the cogeneration of electric energy, the processing of co-products and the internal transportation of the products to Praia Mole Port.
In June 2003 the Hot Strip Mill was included in the Certification scope and in October 2007 the Maritime Barges Terminal was also included in the scope of certification besides the Certifications granted to the other activities in the company. After the audit carried out by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), in October 2009, the ArcelorMittal Tubarão Environment Management System was certified with ISO 14001:2004. The auditors highlighted the advancement in the level of maturity of the Environment Management System, the employees' environmental awareness and the top management commitment are determinants of the environmental management efficiency, which were reflected in the high index of the indicators.
Being awarded this certification is the result of the work developed by ArcelorMittal Tubarão in the continuous improvement of the Environment Management System. Since November 15, 2004, when a new version of the regulation ISO 14001 was published, the company started a review process aiming to include all changes of the regulation making the Environment Management System even more efficient, agile and non-bureaucratic.
The ISO 14001 is the acknowledgement to ArcelorMittal Tubarão corporate culture and philosophy, which incorporates sustainability principles and places men and nature as the centre of their attention, bringing together steel quality and quality of life.
